St Andrews only heathland course continues to flourish
(09 July 2009) (Dukes)As one of the most highly regarded heathland championship courses in Britain, and the only heathland course in St Andrews, golfers will be pleased to learn The Duke’s has spared no expense in maintaining the standard of its course.
Designed by five times Open Champion Peter Thompson, and opened in 1995, The Duke’s, owned by American-based Kohler, has seen some major changes over the last few years, undertaken by well known course designer Tim Liddy.
Recent work includes 116 bunkers with a jagged edged look, thought-provokingly positioned. Despite being a modern course, the Craigtoun Estate on which the course lies is rich with mature trees, bracken, whins, burns and ponds, lending itself to the superb natural look of the course and complementing the numerous links courses of St Andrews.
With caring staff, a well-appointed clubhouse and superb views over the town of St Andrews, golfers are sure to leave having had a most memorable day.
David Scott, Manager Dukes Course said: “The green keepers and staff have worked exceptionally hard at ensuring our greens and overall course live up to visitor’s expectations. We have a dedicated team, who all work together to make sure everything is as good as it can be for all of our golfers and visitors.”
Much of The Duke’s construction was implemented between 2006 to 2008 with continuous conditioning and ground keeping to help maintain the site and emphasise the outstanding beauty of the course.
Jesus Sanjuan, Manager of Golf Escocia, recent feedback “I just want to congratulate you for the great job on the course. I was playing it yesterday afternoon and you have the best greens I´ve seen this year in Scotland.
“The course has always had a beautiful layout, but the shape right now is amazing, and for sure I will recommend it to our clients in the near future, as last 2 years it was nearly unplayable for medium-high handicappers because of the long rough, and now it is one of the best courses in terms of maintenance and playability, so please pass my congrats to all the staff, and keep going.”
