St Andrews set to host transatlantic golf battle
(09 July 2009) (Group)Leading golf journalists to compete in three-day ‘Ryder Cup style’ tussle
St Andrews will once again stage its own version of the Ryder Cup this weekend when it hosts a competition featuring two teams of golf writers – one from the UK and the other from the USA.
During the second Writer Cup (the first was held in 2007), 16 renowned golf writers will compete for victory. The event is being hosted by St Andrews Golf Development Group – a partnership involving the town’s four golf operators; St Andrews Links Trust, Kingsbarns Golf Links, The Old Course Hotel Golf Resort & Spa and Fairmont, St Andrews.
The golf writers will be split into two teams of eight for the three-day competition which tees off on Saturday 11th July at Kingbarns Golf Links. The format of the competition will closely follow that of the Ryder Cup, incorporating a four ball, foursome and singles play-off.
During the transatlantic tussle, both teams will compete across five of St Andrews’ eleven courses, including Kingsbarns Golf Links, The Torrance, The Duke’s, the New Course and The Castle Course.
The competitors are from UK publications such as Golf Monthly, Golf Punk and Golf International as well as US titles including Golf Week and Golf Magazine.
St Andrews Golf Development Group chairman and Chief Executive of St Andrews Links Alan McGregor will hand over the specially commissioned Writer Cup to the winning team on Monday afternoon at The Castle Clubhouse.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, he said:
“The inaugural Writers Cup in 2007 proved to be a big success and we are delighted to be hosting it once again. St Andrews is recognised internationally as the Home of Golf, so it is fitting that we host our very own Ryder Cup style event to showcase the fantastic courses we have here to some of golf’s most influential commentators.
“We believe they will fall in love with the St Andrews golfing experience and help to spread the word on both sides of the Atlantic.
“Nowhere else in the world can boast such a high concentration of top quality golf courses in such close proximity, and we hope to give our guests an experience which, win or lose, they will never forget. I wish both teams an enjoyable and highly charged tournament.”
